What Is Carpal Tunnel?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage in the wrist that the median nerve runs through. When surrounding tissue swells or the nerve gets compressed elsewhere along its path (including the neck), symptoms appear in the hand.

Common Causes

  • Repetitive wrist motion (typing, manual labor, tools)
  • Nerve compression at the wrist or upstream in the neck
  • Inflammation or swelling in the wrist
  • Poor ergonomics at a workstation

Common Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain that radiates up the forearm
  • Symptoms that are worse at night or first thing in the morning

How We Treat It

We evaluate the entire nerve pathway, not just the wrist. Treatment usually includes chiropractic adjustments to relieve nerve compression and rehab exercises to reduce inflammation and restore normal wrist mechanics.
